Why You Should Not Obligate Yourself To Have 8 Glasses Of Water Everyday

Published on

The moment someone mentions about water needs of body, the first thought is the perennial belief of having 8 glasses in a day! But 8 glasses per day is not a benchmark for all. Studies have demonstrated the effects of forcefully feeding your body with 8 glasses of water in a day. Trust us, these results were not all positive.

People who have excess water face a hard time while swallowing. Once you have had enough water, the swallowing reflexes become unresponsive.

Over drinking can lead to a condition of hyponatremia, also known as water toxicity. When there is too much water in your body, the sodium levels descend, giving rise to lethargy, nausea, seizures and in worst cases, even death!

There have been times when athletes have been told to back themselves up with inordinate amount of water, which has caused them to die.

Considering the other side of the coin, not drinking enough water is a problem too! Dehydration can cause headaches, constipation, low energy and obesity.

What to do, then?

When it comes to the ideal quantity of water, men should consume 4 litres of water and women 3liters in a day. But this includes the overall fluid content of your diet, which also encompasses the fluids from food as well.

All we want to emphasize on is the fact that you need not have 8 glasses of water a day if you find it hard to. Rather drink water only when you get thirsty. Don’t stick to the set norms. Find out what your body demands, and go as per needs of your body.
