There is barely anything which is as essential as food. The habit of eating the right food and avoiding the wrong ones is something which must be practiced as often as possible for a healthy body. We often tend to be unaware of the basic advantages, disadvantages and contraindications of what we choose to feed our body with. Here are a few facts about everyday foods.

 

1. Lemon

Lemon constitutes the perfect diet. It not only carries minimal calories and zero cholesterol, but also contains dietary fibers and vitamin C. Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant which prevents the disease of gums called scurvy. Vitamin C also protects you against numerous infections by boosting immunity. In trace amounts, lemon also contains vitamin A, which maintains skin, mucous membrane and eyesight.

Some contraindications of lemon include gastro esophageal reflex disease, arthritis and previous allergic history.

 

2. Tomato

Tomatoes are another of the low calorie foods, with literally no cholesterol or fat. The antioxidants in tomato are effective in fighting cancers of colon, prostate, breast, endometrium and pancreas. The lycopene which is found in abundance in these gorgeous looking foods guards against the UV radiation. The xanthin in tomato offers protection against macular disease. Another excellent ingredients of tomato are vitamin A and vitamin C.

Contraindication- The contraindication is primarily associated with unripe green tomatos. These might elicit severe allergic reactions in some people or might as well worsen migraine. Thus it is highly recommended to consume only ripe tomatos.

 

3. Milk and dairy

Needless to say, dairy products are amazing sources of calcium and protein. Milk also contains fats and vitamin B12. The fat content vary, depending upon the type of milk being consumed.

Dairy products contain calcium, potassium and protein way more than sources like broccoli, banana and cheese respectively. Dairy products have also been believed to reduce blood pressure and lower the risk for cardiovascular disease. Yogurt is an excellent food. It is especially good as it not only aids getting rid of the digestion problems, but can easily be taken by those who are lactose intolerant.

Contraindications- Ciprofloxacin, allergies, digestive problems, people with acne prone skin.

 

4. Coffee

A cup of coffee not only alleviates you from the sleep that you have been wanting to kill for all the good reasons, but it also makes you smarter. Coffee causes enhancement of brain functions like cognitive function, memory, alertness, mood and memory. Another significant positive effect of coffee is that it helps you reduce weight as it boosts the metabolic rate. Coffee also contains essential nutrition factors like B5, B4, Magnesium, Manganese etc. other positive effects of coffee include protection from numerous cancers, preventing Alzheimer’s disease, stroke and depression. 

Contraindications- severe acidity or gastritis, pregnant or breastfeeding mothers, chronic insomnia, liver disease.

 

5. Ginger

Ginger is way more than a mere condiment. It has been an age old remedy in treating flu as it is a natural expectorant and a potent anti inflammatory agent. Ginger is also believed to combat infections and reduce morning sickness. Studies have also shown that ginger holds the potential to kill cancer cells, and it is hence advised to patients with ovarian and colorectal cancer.

Contraindications- Not exactly a contraindication, but people who take drugs for diabetes, blood pressure, anti coagulants should be cautious of over use as it might as ginger interacts with these medications.

 

6. Olive oil

You must have heard from almost everyone that olive oil is excellent. Sure it is, but do you know why? There are plenty of reasons. First, it has anti inflammatory and antioxidant properties. This causes all the cells to function the best. Second, it improves brain and digestive health. Olive oil has in fact been known to arrest the growth of harmful bacteria. Third, it reduces risk to type 2 diabetes and stroke. Olive oil even improves the function of arteries in old people. Olive oil is excellent and you must ensure that you include it in your diet.    

 

7. Chocolates

You are wrong if you think that chocolates are just good in taste. It is way more than just good taste. To begin with, chocolates are loaded with antioxidants. The amount of antioxidants might as well be more than vegetables. The endorphins in chocolates are the feel good substances. Thus they fight the PMS which takes so much energy. This savoring food also aids in improving heart condition and lowering blood pressure. There is some controversy about the effect of chocolates on skin. Where on one hand it is believed that chocolates prevent damage to skin from UV radiation, it is also known to cause breakouts in some people. Despite its numerous advantages, there is something you must not forget while consuming chocolates- anything in excess in harmful.

So do get the bar of your favorite chocolate, but do not consume it all at once.

When should you not eat chocolates? If you are planning to reduce weight, or suffer from migraine, have acne prone skin or Herpes. 

 

You should make it a point to eat the foods which are essential to keep your health in order instead of ruining it. Some foods taste good, yet their effects on body on devastating, whereas the foods which are beneficial for your health might not taste so good. It is thus essential to know what you eat.
