The reason behind neck swelling is collection of fluids in the neck tissue or inflammation in the neck. Causes of inflammation might range from a recent medical procedure to injury or infection. Following are the causes of neck swellings. They might be more serious than you think. So visit a doctor as soon as possible.

 

1. Lymph nodes

Lymph nodesare an essential part of the immune system. They serve as filters of lymph fluid containing foreign particles and infectious agents. There are lymph nodes all over the body but they become prominent only when they are swollen. For lymph node enlargement, infections are the most common cause. Other causes are inflammation and cancers.

Reasons for swollen lymph nodes include:

  • Cold and flu
  • Ear infections
  • Skin infections
  •  Abscessed or impacted tooth
  • Gum disease, mouth sores
  • Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)

 

2. HIV infection

The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection destroys the immune system making it harder to fight infections. It can spread through blood transfusions, needle sharing, from a pregnant mother to her foetus and sexual contact.

  • Symptoms- headache, rashes of different types, mouth sores, muscle aches, sore throat, recurrent infections.

 

3. Pulmonary tuberculosis

Pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) is a bacterial infection caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis that infects the lungs.

  • Symptoms – swollen or tender lymph nodes in the neck or other areas. Long lasting cough, excessive sweating at night, weight loss, fatigueand fever .

 

4. Mononucleosis

Mononucleosis is an infection. It is more common in adolescents and young adults.

  • Symptoms – throat and fatigue, weakness, swollen glands in the neck, aches, dizziness and enlarged spleen.

 

5. Hodgkin’s lymphoma

Cancer of the lymph tissue in the lymph nodes, in sites like spleen, liver, bone marrow is called Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

 

  • Symptoms – painless swelling of the lymph nodes in the neck, armpits, without a known cause, fatigue, loss of appetite, night sweats, fever and chills that come and go, itching all over the body that cannot be explained and unexplained weight loss.

 

6. Non-Hodgkin lymphoma

Non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) is another type of cancer of the lymph tissue. However, the exact cause of this cancer is not known, it has been observed that is develops in those people with weak immunity system, including people with HIV.

 

  • Symptoms – Apart from the swollen lymph nodes in the neck, armpits, or groin and other symptoms of Hodgkin lymphoma are coughing or shortness of breath, concentration problems, personality changes, abdominal pain or swelling, headache, or even seizures if the brain is affected.

 

7. Leukaemia

Leukaemia is cancer of the white blood cells.

 

  • Symptoms - Include fever or night sweats, painless swollen lymph nodes in the neck, easy bruising, swelling or discomfort in the abdomen frequent infections, fatigue, unexplained weight loss and pain in the bones or joints indicate leukaemia.
