Getting tooth removed can be a fairly uncomfortable experience for many, yet it is something inevitable. There can be various reasons why your dentist might have asked you to get rid of your precious tooth. Some of the most common reasons are in the following blog.

Irrespective of the reason, there is a protocol that you need to follow. If these protocols are not kept in mind, there are chances that you might get a dry socket, a condition which is one of the most feared consequences of tooth extraction.

Keep in mind the following points the next time you get your tooth pulled:

1.    DO NOT SPIT

This is the crux, something you just cannot neglect, which is precisely the reason why it has been mentioned in caps! Who would wish to gulp down their own blood fused saliva? But after you get your tooth removed, you have to resist the urge to spit. You DO NOT HAVE TO SPIT FOR TWENTY-FOUR HOURS.

Immediately after your extraction, your dentist will give you a gauze piece, called as pressure pack to be kept at the extraction site. Do not remove that gauze for the next one hour. Make sure that there is some pressure exerted because of its placement, which is the objective of putting it there.

There is a reason why you are asked not to spit and rather swallow the saliva. By doing this, you are ensuring that the clot formed does not get dislodged, which in the case does, results in a lot of pain and is an emergency which needs to be addressed immediately!

2.    Pain and its cure

It is perfectly natural to feel some pain in the region of extraction. Often people expect the entire procedure to be absolutely painless. Even if the procedure is made painless (which often is by proficient dentists), some pain after the procedure would be present. The reason is your tooth and the region surrounding it has nerve endings, which when exposed, resulting in pain. Since there is an open wound at the site of removal, pain cannot be avoided. However, its intensity can be reduced with the medicines your dentist will prescribe you. On taking these medicines according to the instructions, the pain would be considerably reduced.

3.    It is ice cream time!

Many people love the period of tooth extraction because this is the period when your dentist will ask you to have as much ice cream as you want to! In fact, the very first thing that they will ask you to do is eat ice- cream within an hour of extraction. What more can anyone want in this not so sweet world!

Ice cream or anything cold causes vasoconstriction at the site of extraction, which helps in the better clot, ensuring that the clot is kept in place. So, it is time to grab your favorite ice cream tub and satisfy your sweet tooth (that too, with consent from a specialist).

4.    And time for cold meals and tea too L

Whoever said that the world is full of just roses was a fool. Roses come with thorns (and so does ice- cream :S). Your dentist will strictly advise you to consume everything cold for a day or two after extraction. Listen to them because the abundance of ice cream, in this case, will come with a price to be paid, which again will help in better and quicker clot formation and maintenance.

Whatever you eat or drink has to be cold, be it tea, daliya, khichdi and so on.

5.    Do not forget the rinses

Various dentists have various regimens when it comes to rinsing. Some might ask you to use a povidine iodine mouthwash while others prefer warm saline rinses. Some dentists also advise you to use plain clean water to rinse the site of extraction. Whatever might the regimen be, the point is to keep the site clean as you are asked to not to brush for a day or two after extraction.

A major problem when it comes to any procedure in the oral cavity is the fact that it is constantly exposed to a plethora of microbes constantly, which poses a threat of infection. Since in extraction, there is an open wound present in the oral cavity, it is advised that the site is kept as clean as possible.

6.    Nor should you forget to NOT to bite

You should not chew or brush on the side where extraction has been done for a day or two. This is the reason why dentists do not extract teeth from both sides simultaneously because it causes a lot of difficulties for the patient as they would be unable to chew and bite appropriately.

Thus, you should avoid biting from the same side and avoid brushing too for effective clot formation. But after two days, you should resume biting from the side, gradually.

7.    How can we ignore this one: NO SMOKING!

If you are a smoker, it is going to be a tough time for you. You must abstain from smoking for 3 to 4 days after extraction. Smoking again is a threat for dry socket. Goes without saying, but no alcohol as well! Even though the pain and discomfort might compel you to grab a Glen Fiddich, we would suggest you wait for a few days. The medications that you are given after extraction might interact in not a very pleasant way with alcohol. Why take a chance?

P.S. this is a great opportunity to quit smoking if you were looking for one, just saying!

A word of caution:

1.    There are certain things which you will experience after extraction which is normal and should not get on you. This includes:

2.    Formation of some yellowish deposit at the extraction site, which is nothing but healing tissue.

3.    Mild to moderate swelling, which will be encountered by most patients. Do not worry as it will subside in a few days.

4.    Tingling and anesthesia: you might feel a little numb on the side of extraction, which is more than normal and will go away on its own.

Now, you should drop the fret that comes as soon as the word extraction is used by your dentist. The most essential “do” post extraction is trusting your dentist and the most essential “don’t” is to panic!
